Kenya LTV 1:01 TALIO

Name / Location of the Project: Talio Primary School is located in Coast Province, Taita Taveta District on the Sagalla Hills. It is a five-hour journey of 338 km from Nairobi to Voi town and an additional 20 km from Voi town to Talio Primary School. From Voi town to Mombasa City it is a maximum two-hour journey of 156 km.
Project Description: It is a learning institution consisting of eight (8) classrooms and a kindergarten, with 165 pupils at the ratio of 81 girls to 84 boys.
Type Of Work / Job: The institution needs a teacher, to teach English and introduce a foreign language; and coordinate some of the various school clubs like scouting, wildlife and 4K clubs and establish a tree nursery.
Skills Requirement:
Ø One with teaching skills and / or experience.
Ø Knowledge of tree nursery establishment.
Ø Basic knowledge of scouting, wildlife (optional)
Note: In the Primary School teaching no specialization is required/needed.
Duration: 0-3months, 0-6 Months for Mid-Term volunteers and over 6-12 months for Long-Term volunteers, though preference is given to (1) one year for a solid performance assessment.

Kenya LTV 1:02 RUMANGAO

Name / Location of the Project: Rumangao dispensary is located in the Coast Province, Taita Taveta District on the Sagalla Hills. It is a five-hour journey of 338km from Nairobi to Voi town. There is an additional distance of 20km from Voi town to the village's trading center and from there a walking distance of 2km to the project. From Voi town to Mombasa City it is a maximum two-hour journey of 156km.
Project Description: It is basically a health institution. Rumangao, a small community health project currently has minimal out patient services, because the facility lacks permanent medical practitioners.

Kenya LTV 1:03 MARIE

Name / Location of the Project: Marie Primary School is located in the Coast Province of Kenya, Taita Taveta District on the top parts of Sagalla Hills. It is a five-hour journey of 338km from Nairobi to Voi town. From Voi town to Mombasa City it is a maximum two-hour journey of 156km.
Project Description: It is a learning institution consisting of eight (8) classrooms comprising of 121 pupils (67 boys and 54 girls) with an average of 16 pupils per class.
Type of Work / Job:
o Not restricted to any particular subject (s) but to be fully incorporated into the school system.
o Introduction of a foreign language
o Participation in extra - curricular activities like Drama, Wildlife, 4K and Music clubs
Skills Requirement:
Ø One with teaching skills and / or experience.
Ø Ability and willingness to participate in extra curriculum activities
Duration: 0-3months, 0 -6 months for Mid-Term volunteers and over 6-12 months for Long-Term volunteers, though preference is given to (1) one year for a solid performance assessment.

Kenya LTV 1:05 KURIA

Name / Location of the Project: Kuria Child and Family Programme is located in Nyanza Province, Kuria District, Mabera Division along the Migori - Isibania Road. It is a maximum nine-hour journey of 450km from Nairobi City.
Project Description: The institution is involved in girl child education, feeding and health care programmes. It is affiliated to the Christian Children Fund (CCF).
Duties and Responsibilities:

§ Involvement in health care
Skills Requirement:
Ø Social work skills and / or experience.
Ø Knowledge in childcare and health issues.
Ø Readiness to be involved in community empowerment
Duration: 0-3months, 0-6 months for Mid-Term volunteers and over 6-12 months for Long-Term volunteers. Ideally, the project would accommodate volunteers for a period of 1 - 2 years especially for the health facility and education program. However, Short - / Mid- Term volunteers of 2 - 6 months will be absorbed particularly working within the community.

Kenya LTV 1:06 VIGINA

Name / Location of the project: Vigina Secondary School is located in Western Province, Vihiga District. It is a distance of 450km from Nairobi City to Majengo (a trading centre), and an additional of 3km at Bukuga trading center, Vigina.
Project Description: It is a learning institution with boarding and day facilities. The institution has 223 students.
Type of work / Job:
o Teaching Mathematics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Social ethics.
o Introduction of a foreign language and coordination of some of the school's clubs e.g. in Debate, Wildlife, etc.
Skills Requirement:
Ø Teaching skills and / or Experience
Duration: 3 -6 months for Mid-Term volunteers and over 6 months for Long-Term volunteers.
Basic Facts: Upon arrival to Kenya, an orientation session / preparation seminar will be offered. Transport to and from the project, food and accommodation arrangements will be taken care of by KVDA. The area is one of the most densely populated regions in the Kenyan republic.
Climatic Conditions:
· Environment - evergreen, with an annual average rainfall of more than 1500mm.
· The temperatures are moderate (not too hot nor cold). There are wide variations despite the changes in seasons.

· There is a private hospital in Majengo - 3km away from Vigina
· A transport (minibus) connection point - 500m away
· Geographical features in the area include Maragoli Hills (the crying stone) on your way to Kakamega but within the confines of the region among others.
· For shopping possibilities there is Bukuga Shopping Centre within the parameters of the project (where a variety of basic needs are available). One can also try the Luanda Market/Centre on Mondays and Thursdays. Luanda Market/Centre is about 7km away.

Kenya LTV 1:07 K.H.C.

Name / Location of the project: Komotobo Health Center is located in Nyanza Province, Kuria District, which is a maximum 9-hour journey of 697km from the Nairobi City. Project Description It is a health institution assisting Focus Groups in the community (the expectant mothers, children from poor families, the physically handicapped, HIV/AIDS patients and HIV/AIDS Orphans).
Type Of Work / Job: The volunteer(s) will be involved in the following areas: the Sociology Section, Nursing Section, Medical History, Physical Examination, Counseling, Physician Recommendations/Instructions, Pathology, Health Progress, Follow-ups, Autopsy, and Special Examinations.
Skills Requirement:
Ø Nursing skills and / or experience
Ø Doctor's and/or Clinical Officer's skills and / or experience
Ø Basic knowledge of a laboratory technician
Ø Knowledge and / or experience in pharmacy

Kenya LTV 1:08 WEMA

Name / Location of the Project: Wema Center is located in the Coast Province, north of Mombasa City, in Kisauni Division. It is a maximum 7-hour journey of about 494km from the Nairobi City. The center is off the Malindi Bridge along the Mombasa-Malindi Road, a 20-min drive to the outskirts of Mombasa City en-route the old Malindi road; 1.5km off the tarmac road.
Project Description: It is a rehabilitation program for young street families {mothers and children} consisting of multi-facial buildings with classrooms, a health facility, dormitories, the center's poultry farm, cattle pen and an extensive playing ground. It's a Christian Institution with a moral obligation of upbringing the young street families in conformation with the Christian church values.
Duties and Responsibilities:

§ Involvement in recreational activities like sports, games, etc.
§ Involvement in the centre's farming initiatives.

· Environment - Very friendly and cool especially during the rainy seasons {March, April, May, June} though generally the coastal area is normally hot and humid. Humidity at times is over 60 percent.
· Temperatures range between 28 - 33 degrees Centigrade though there are slight variations depending on the season.
· The area around the centre is bushy a bit with the traditional tall coconut trees surrounding it.
Other Facts:
· Apart from center's health facility which takes care of minor ailments (sickness), the nearest hospital is about 6km away
· Nearest bus connection is 1.5km away
· For a wide variety of shopping possibilities - 5km away {complex shopping center}
· Clean wholesome well-water supply within the center {but one is normally advised to adequately boil the water or purify it using chlorine tabs}
· The center has electricity supply
· Provision for center's kitchen for cooking own meals or cooking with the center's Matron.

The center is a rehabilitation institution for young street families (girls), which is a venerable group in the society.

Kenya LTV 1:09 KARAGO

Name / Location of the Project: Karago primary school is located in Eastern Province, Embu District, Kieni Division, Kieni South Location a distance of 250km from the Nairobi City to Embu town. From the Makutano junction, it is about 22km to Karago Primary School. It is a journey of about 3 ½ hours.
Project Description: It is a learning institution for primary school pupils and nursery children comprising of 210 pupils at the ratio of 109 to 101 girls. The institution consists of 8 classes with nine (9) teaching staff, 6 males and 3 females.
Duties and Responsibilities:
o Teaching mathematics, art subjects, English, Kiswahili and Science.
o Introduction of a foreign language
o Organization, coordination and participation in extra-curricular activities like athletics, football, etc
o Coordination of clubs in the school like Scouting, Athletics, Drama, Music, etc
Skills Requirement:
Ø Teaching skills and / or experience.
Ø Ability and willingness to organize, coordinate and participate in extra-curricular activities and club affairs
Duration: 0-3months, 0-6 Months for Mid-Term volunteers and over 6-12 months for Long-Term volunteers, though preference is given to (1) one year for a solid performance assessment.

· The altitude is over 1800m above the sea level.

Kenya LTV 1:10 MAKONGENI

Name / Location Of Project: Makongeni Self Help group is located in Eastern Province, Machakos District, Kathiani Division, in Makongeni Village. It is about 68km along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. There is a diversion on the highway to Machakos town. From Machakos Town there is an additional distance of about 12km to Kaani Trading Center and then a distance of 4km off the Machakos -Kitui road to Makongeni Village.
Project Description: It is a community initiative programme comprising 48 persons both men and women.
Type Of Work / Job:
o Volunteer(s) to the project will be involved in a variety of activities:
o Tree nurseries establishment and tending
o Soil conservation
o Organic Farming
o Water supply and sanitation
o HIV/AIDS awareness
o Community empowerment and mobilization
Note: The group has a water supply project where member (s) sell water to public to ensure self-sustainability.
Skills Requirement :
Ø Basic knowledge in community development and skills and / or experience will be highly appreciated.
Ø Basic knowledge and skills and / or experience in social work
Ø Basic knowledge and skills and / or experience in environmental matters {conservation and education}, tree nurseries establishment and soil conservation will be an advantage.

Kenya LTV 1:11 TAGARE

Name / Location of Project: Tagare Health Development Programme is located in Nyanza Province, Kuria District, Mabera Division, along the Migori - Isibania Road. It is a nine-hour journey of about 450km from the Nairobi City. Tagare is situated about 100m from right side of the road.
Project Description: It is a resource center for Home Base Care {HBC} activities of HIV\AIDS victims and the general diseases of public health importance. It consists of 12 volunteers representing 3 members per village.
Type Of Work / Job:
o Involvement in the identification of full blown HIV/AIDS victims and giving back the feedback
o Data collection.
o Youth mobilization
o Organization and coordination of various activities such as sports, drama, public meetings, etc.
o Referral of the sick to the hospital from the village/home
o Dispensing of low cost / affordable painkillers to the HIV\AIDS infected
persons and at times giving the drugs free of charge.
o Capacity building
Skills Requirement:
Ø One with public health skills and / or experience.
Ø Basic knowledge and skills and / or experience in nursing
Ø Basic knowledge and skills and / or experience in social work and also guidance and counseling.

Name / Location of the Project: Kenya Institute of Organic Farming is located near Juja Town on the outskirts of Nairobi a 40min journey of about 30km along the Nairobi-Thika Road. It is situated toward the eastern part from the Nairobi City. It is in Central Province, Kiambu District and Thika the nearest town {about10kms}.
Project Description: K.IO.F. is an organic farming training and demonstration institution with boarding students and has community-outreach / training programmes which include gardening, teaching students and farmers within the community, Extension work {rural\community talks} and working closely with the community are part of its undertakings.
Type Of Work / Job: Volunteer(s) placed at the institution will be involved in community fieldwork and follow-up visits on community farms.

Name / Location of the Project: Law Wamaki Women Group is located in Nyanza Province, Kisumu District, Nyahera Division, on the Western highlands of Kenya along the Kisumu - Kakamega Road. It is a four-hour journey of about 340km from the Nairobi City and an additional 10km to Kiboswa from the Kisumu bus terminal.
Project Description: It is basically a women group involved in the initiation of HIV/AIDS projects covering Home-Based Care (HBC), care for the infected and affected victims who are mainly the orphans and widows of the pandemic and the empowerment of the mentioned persons.
Type of Work / Job Description: The institution needs a social worker and medical personnel.
Skills Requirement:

Ø Knowledge and skills and/or experience in health issues and general nursing.

Name / Location of the Project: Dago-Thim Primary School is located in Nyanza Province, Kisumu District, Nyahera Division, on the Western highlands of Kenya along the Kisumu - Kakamega Road. It is a four-hour journey of about 340km from the Nairobi City and an additional 10km to Kiboswa from the Kisumu bus terminal.
Project Description: It is a learning institution for primary school pupils and has a nursery school too. The institution has 585 pupils. There are eight classrooms for the primary pupils and two for the nursery.
Type of Work / Job Description: The institution needs a teacher in any relevant part of the school's curriculum; and be involved also in extra-curricular activities.

Ø One with teaching skills and / or experience.

Project Description: It is an orphanage set up to take care of orphans from the community most of whom their parents have died of HIV/AIDS and/or related diseases.

Kenya LTV 1:17 J.E.C.K.

Name / Location of the Project: The St John's Escape Self-Help Group Kibera is within the Mashimoni Village in one of the populous slums in Africa (Kenya) known as Kibera. It's an about 20min drive on the outskirts of the Nairobi Central Business District {commonly referred to as the City Centre}. The project is situated in the Lang'ata Constituency, Nairobi Province.
Project Description: A learning institution with three semi-permanent building with about 300 children.
Type Of Work / Job: The project needs a teacher, a social worker, medical personnel in preventive medicine .
Skills Requirement:
Ø One with teaching and/or social work and/or water and sanitation skills and / or experience.
Ø Basic knowledge and skills and / or experience in nursing
Ø Basic knowledge and skills and / or experience in dressmaking or garment {fashion and designs} making will be an added advantage
Note: On the school's teaching part no specialization is required/needed.

One will have to rely on the Nairobi City facilities, which are convenient and offer many options and possibilities. Accommodation will be outside the slums but the project work will be in the slums. Note: The project offers a chance to see and experience the life in one of the biggest slums in Africa with a highly dense population of people {about 60 percent of Nairobians} where despite all these extreme aspects of slum life children can be seen, running & playing happily and always smiling: "Hoping for a better tomorrow". Staffs of the entire concerned project do speak and understand English and also quite a good number of the local people. However, some of the local people can only understand Swahili (one of the of the national languages) and their local language.

Name / Location of the project: Kirasha Rescue Center of Children is in Lari Division, Limuru Region approximately 70 Kilometers from Nairobi. Outskirts of Nairobi, in Central Province.
Project Description: It is a five-year-old center for internally displaced families with over 200 children
Duties and Responsibilities: Teaching children, coordination of extra curricular activities,sports,home visits, small scale farming.
Skills / Job Requirements: Social work, teaching skills and community empowerment,capacity building,recreative skills.
Duration: 0-3 months, 0-6 months for Mid Term and over 6-12 months for long term
Basic Facts: Orientation, transport to and from the project and accommodation is provided.

Project Description: It is an orphanage consisting of both 22 orphans and street children aged 7 years to 18 year children from within and outside the community.
Type of Work / Job: The orphanage needs one with agricultural knowledge to help the children practice organic farming and become self reliant and social work.
